NHL 10 Demo

As most of you know by now, the NHL 10 Demo has been released for xbox live Gold members.

The demo is a very in depth demo with both V.S. and Be A Pro modes.

The new board play feature both works and could cause problems. It is fun and causes forechecking to be a large part of the game. But the pinning feature appears too powerful. If you are near a defender, with the puck along the boards, you more than likely will get pinned.

Sometimes you can draw a penalty this way but it is much like the original stick lift, simply too effective and to likely to be abused. Hopefully it is tuned down a little bit so that a defender cannot trap a forward full speed coming down the wing.

Once pinned, you do need to use trategy to make sure your team retains possession of the puck. Whether to move it right away or wait till you have room to move it has to be considered. Puck possession will be huge this year and our team needs to work on that.

There are also many more rebounds, deflections, blocked shots and caroms that make the game much more realistic. Goalies are much more agile this year, often making amazing saves and frustrating the shooter. I find the goalie play much improved this year, with more realistic goals.

Passing will also take some time to get used to. Gone are the days where a no look backhander from the corner will find your tape through 4 sets of legs. This will be the year of dirty goals and screen shots, which is also more realistic.

AMC - "Don't Stalk Me"

What a shot. These guys glitched all game and we came back and AMC snipes this shot in overtime. Afterwards, they were so angry, they literally started stalking us. They were sending us messages with our addresses in it. Wow. Anyone remember their team name? We should tell an EA moderator about this!

EASHL Championship

PS3's NHL Regulators won the coin toss for home ice advantage. However, it did not help them because 360's Purple Cobraz won the first two games 2-1 and 5-4. The Cobraz continued their winning streak, sweeping the series (2-0 & 1-0) to become the first EASHL Champions.

"Purple Cobraz like to thank the pensblog for allowing us to practice scoring glitch goals!" :P

EASHL Fixes

Here is a older vid with initial fixes the team wanted to address for NHL10. They are planning to release more info perhaps tomorrow or next week that will address the changes they have made.

Stay tuned! "

EASHL Championship Finals Set: Purple Cobraz vs The NHL Regulators

In every sport there can only be one winner. Over the past year, thousands have teamed up in the first ever EA SPORTS Hockey League in NHL 09 to bring their individual game to a new league where team play allowed our gamers to play together like never before.

For the past three weeks, sixteen of the top teams in the league have been invited to take part in an Online tournament to determine two Console Champions in the EASHL Invitational. This past Saturday, the two Console Champions have been crowned as big ups go to The NHL Regulators and Purple Cobraz who will be representing the PlayStation 3 and XBOX 360 consoles respectively.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be crowned the best team on the XBOX 360,” says Brandon LeBourveau aka DoMiNaTioN x21 one of the GM’s of the Purple Cobraz. “When I first heard about the new EASHL last summer, I knew I wanted to win the Championship.”

As Console Champs alongside the Purple Cobraz, The NHL Regulators will have their top six players in attendance in Vancouver from August 5th - August 7th to take part in a Best-of-Seven game series to crown the inaugural EASHL Champion.

“It’s exciting,” replies Bobby Jones aka Jones412pa one of the GM’s of The Regs. “Who would have thought playing a game would give you a chance to do something like this.”

The console finals this past Saturday saw some intense competition between the Final Four as The Regs defeated the #1 ranked No CryBabys by the score of 4-1 to take the PS3 title. On the 360 end the Cobraz needed to come from behind late in the game with a tying goal from LeBourveau, and then NfldTim scored the overtime winner to defeat the favored White Church in their final 2-1.

“We had to battle through a lot of adversity in that game especially since we spent the majority of the first two periods killing off penalties,” comments LeBrourveau. Don’t tell these guys that gaming is entirely different than actual sports as the similarities in their approach to the game are not unlike those that championship teams face. “As the time was winding down in the in the third and we trailed 1-0, we were all getting extremely nervous but I think that our experience this season helped us prevail. We know that this is a 60-minute game and we have to play hard to the final buzzer.”

On the PS3 end, The Regs had somewhat of an easier time skating to their victory. “We expected a closer game,” says Jones. “We capitalized on just about every chance we had and controlled the game using all five of our skaters.”

The Championship series in Vancouver brings both teams face to face while at the same time, it will bring the individual teams face-to-face as many on teams play from different cities altogether.

“Our chances are good if we can snag a game on the XBOX and play well on our console,” replies Jones when asked about the upcoming series which will have teams crossing over into both consoles.

“We are going to Vancouver with one goal in mind: Win the EASHL Championship. We will be ready to play each and every game and are not too worried about having to play on the PS3 console,” continues LeBourveau. > MORE

EASHL Championship Finals

Championship Game will take place in Vancouver. The teams will play in a Best-of-Seven series to take place August 5th-7th. The Purple Cobraz "home Ice" will be the X-box 360 while The NHL Regulators will be Defending the PS3. Each team will have to adapt to both consoles quickly in order to win the championship.

It would be pretty sweet if thePensblog could set up a similar tournament?!?!

Penguins mania pushes Hockeytown aside

[CHICAGO, IL] -- Stop. Zip it. Don't go there!

Sure, the Pittsburgh Penguins have claimed their first Stanley Cup in the Sidney Crosby era, but before we anoint them as the next great NHL dynasty, let's see how this plays out first.

In the salary-cap age, there are too many things that sabotage the kind of run that the Edmonton Oilers had two decades ago. Until Crosby and company hoist at least two more Stanley Cups in the next few years, the dynasty talk is just that - talk.

As for the best hockey town in the United States, well, let's pass the torch right here, right now.

So long, Hockeytown, Michigan. Hello, Pucksburgh, Pennsylvania.

Detroit was worthy recipient of the title over the years, but no city in the US of A deserves it more than the Pittsburgh now. In the Penguins, the 'Burgh has a talented young team with a steely revolve whose best days are ahead of it, one that plays in a town that has been puck nuts for years, win or lose. In Ray Shero, it has an astute, aggressive general manager with championship genes. In Mario Lemieux, it has a team owner with a Hall of Fame presence. In two seasons, the team also will have its own state-of-the-art arena.

(Ground control to Marian Hossa: When you turned down a chance to play with these guys for five seasons, just what were you thinking?)

That’s not to say that the Red Wings will fall over a cliff any time soon. The organ-i-zation has too much depth and pride and smarts for that to happen.

Nonetheless, there’s a reason to think that the glory days are behind the Red Wings for awhile. Team captain Nicklas Lidstrom is 39 years old, and for one of the few times in his career, Mr. Norris Trophy looked like it in the playoffs. Forward Kris Draper is 38. Goaltender Chris Osgood and forward Tomas Holstrom are 36. D-man Brian Rafalski is 35. Center Pavel Datsyuk will turn 31 soon. It had to happen sometime, but the Big Red Machine has a lot well-worn parts now.

What puts Pucksburgh over the top is the best sixth man in the league. In Detroit, tickets to even some playoffs games were readily available this spring, which would have been unthinkable not long ago. Meanwhile, the Penguins have sold out Mellon Arena in 188 consecutive games, a streak that began after Crosby came aboard.

In the playoffs, the Mellonheads that don’t have tickets watch the game on a supersized TV monitor outside the arena doors. In the final game, NBC turn party-pooper and pulled the plug on the lawn party, but that didn’t stop a suburban Pittsburgh couple. They showed the game on a 10- by 15-foot screen outside their home, where a few hundred fans pulled up lawn chairs and whooped it up on the street.

Would you believe that 375,000 people showed up for the championship parade? Or nearly 15 percent of Greater Pittsburgh? On a Monday afternoon? And that only two arrests were made?

"We got off to a bad start, but they stuck behind us," Crosby said of the fans after the Stanley Cup clincher. "They have been so loyal to us for a long time. They deserve this."

When is the best time to rob a bank in the 'Burgh? Easy. When a Penguins game is on television. Local ratings are so ridiculous, nobody would know about it. The seventh game of the conference semifinals against the Washington Capitals was the highest-rated NHL game for any Fox Sports Network regional outlet in the country. In the regular season, the average Penguins game produced a 6.9 rating, the best of any FSN affiliate for the second consecutive season. More

NHL 10 Update

NHL 10 passing system will be one of the many factors that will change the gameplay of the NHL series. Drop passes, bank passes and throwing the puck into open ice will now be welcomed additions to the game. Players will also be able to take mid-air rebound shots as seen Here.

EA is about to release the New Goalie Animations. We will post it here as soon as we can.

CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS STAR PATRICK KANE
THE NEW FACE OF EA SPORTS NHL10

Electronic Arts Inc. today revealed that 20-year-old scoring phenom Patrick Kane of the Chicago Blackhawks will be the new face of the NHL® 10 videogame from EA SPORTS™. Kane is the youngest player ever chosen for the cover of the NHL franchise and his image will be on the front of all packaging when NHL 10 is available in North American retail stores this September.

Having emerged as one of the most skilled players in the NHL in just two seasons, Kane won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 2008 and this year led the Blackhawks to the Western Conference Finals. He has scored more than 20 goals and registered more than 70 points in each of his first two seasons.

“It’s exciting to be on the cover of my favorite videogame after playing just my second year as a professional,” said Kane. “When you look back at some of the great players who have had this opportunity, it’s an honor to be a part of the EA SPORTS family and contribute to a game I’ve been playing for more than 10 years.”

EASHL Championships

After months and months of grinding it out online, the inaugural season has come to a close. While teams continue to duke it out online for bragging rights, we have gone ahead and selected 16 of the top Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 teams to take part in this year's post-season tournament, the NHL 09 EASHL Invitational.

NHL10 - Update

Overview

"The NHL franchise that has won 19 sports game of the year awards over the past two years begins a new era with gameplay innovations that deliver a new standard of toughness, the emotion of playoff hockey on the ice and in the arena, and over 200 gameplay refinements that replicate the skill and finesse that every fan sees throughout the NHL playoffs.

A new first-person fighting engine enables players to trade punches with an NHL tough guy. Feel what it’s like to be on the ice in the skates of an NHL player to throw and dodge punches. Grab and tug an opponent’s jersey to land a punch that ignites the fans and sparks your team to victory. Challenge a skill player and an opposing team tough guy will step in to settle the score.

On ice toughness and intimidation is taken to a new level in NHL 10 where winning one-on-one battles for possession of the puck along the boards becomes a test of will and skill. Utilizing an all-new board physics engine, players can use their body to shield the puck on the boards and then kick-pass it to teammates. Bigger, stronger players pin opponents to the boards while fanatical fans bang on the glass, just like real life. Fore-check defenders, pressure the puck and finish checks to intimidate your opponent into mistakes. Players fatigue, bobble passes, and avoid collisions under threat of constant physical pressure. Inspire teammates, ignite the fans and change the momentum of a game by instigating scrums, drawing penalties, and mixing it up — all after the referee blows the whistle!"

PLAYER ATTRIBUTE EFFECTS

Offensive Attributes

Wrist shot accuracy
-Accuracy of all shots other than slapshots

Wrist shot power
-Power of all shots other than slapshots

Puck Control
-Related to the deking effect of shooting, good puck control prevents the loss of accuracy
-Ability to keep the puck when bumped or there is stick to stick contact on the puck carrier

Deking
-Quality of loose puck dekes
-Speed of right stick deking
-Effect on shot accuracy while deking (O'RLY)

Slap Shot Accuracy
-Accuracy of slap shots

Slap Shot Power
-Power of slap shots

Passing
-Magnitude of the effect on quality of passes outside of the player's field of view (see Off.Aware)
-Also affects the likelihood of pass interception, e.g. a good passer affects opponents ability to intercept passes. This is old stuff, I do not like this artificial approach at all, it should just affect the quality of the pass and the opponents should deal with the puck based on their own situation and attributes. This is part of the cause of the weirdness you sometimes see where players won't intercept pucks it seems they should.
-Automatic saucer passes for humans
-Other effects on CPU passing

Off. Awareness
-Field of view is for making passes, passes to players outside field of view are slowed (see Passing)
-Affects CPU player decision making when passing

Deflections
-Affects the quality of deflections off slap passes.
-Ideally this would have more of an effect on whether the deflection connects in the first place and on how well placed the deflected puck is.

Defensive Attributes

Balance
-Ability to resist hits and keep control of the puck
(O'RLY)

Checking
-Ability to hit
-CPU decision to hit

Defensive Awareness
-Pass interceptions
-Reaction time for defensively deflecting passes away
-For CPU, more effort on when backchecking

Discipline
-Takes fewer penalties, for humans this affects calls that would randomly occur on hits (like elbows)

Face-offs
-Better chance of winning face-offs

Shot Blocking
-Bad shot blockers get the standing shot block, good ones get the sliding one which reduces the screen effect.

Aggressiveness
-Tendency of CPU player to body check
-No effect on human.

FreeCandyYan
-Increases the likelihood of 12+ penalty minutes per game.

Athleticism Attributes

Acceleration
-Forward acceleration

Agility
-Turning ability

Speed
-Top speed

Toughness
-Fighting ability
-Increased tendency to take penalties (it will be gone for NHL10)

Endurance
-Recover from fatigue more quickly

Durability
-Ability to withstand injuries

Garbage
-Ability to play more like Eric Politowski

GOALIE ATTRIBUTE EFFECTS

Goalie Reflex Attributes

Angles
-How far out the goalie comes to challenge
-Quickness reacting to a pass

Breakaway
-Modifies save ability on breakaways (essentially a modifier on Agility for this case only)

Five hole
Glove High
Glove Low
Stick High
Stick Low
-Quickness making saves to the respective region

Goalie Puck Control Attributes

Passing
-Goalie pass and clearance strength

Poke Checking
-Likelihood of the goalie attempting a poke check (CPU only)

Puck Playing
-How aggressively the goalie will go out to play a loose puck

Rebound Control
-Modifies how far the puck bounces off the goalie when it hits him

Shot Recovery
-How quickly the goalie gets up when after being down - currently no effect

Goalie Athleticism Attributes

Agility
-Quickness making saves in general, combines with region attribs (5-hole, glove high, glove low, stick high, stick low)
-Acceleration moving around the crease

Aggressiveness
-Should be how far he comes out to challenge, but it is not working currently because it is tied to Angles instead

Durability
-Not used in game because goalies do not get injured currently

Endurance
-Not used in game

Speed
-Speed moving in the crease and when skating

Vision
-Reduces the likelihood of the goalie being screened

Anti-Syniper
-Reduces the likelihood of being scored by your own team.

Awesome

Los Angeles, April 8, 1984- Former Pittsburgh Pirates' pitcher Dock Ellis says he was under the influence of LSD when he pitched a 1970 no-hitter against the San Diego Padres.

Ellis, now co-ordinator of an anti drug program in Los Angeles, said he didn't know until six hours before his June 12, 1970 no hitter that he was going to pitch.

"I was in Los Angeles, and the team was playing in San Diego , but I didn't know it. I had taken LSD..... I thought it was an off-day, that's how come I had it in me. I took the LSD at noon. At 1pm, his girlfriend and trip partner looked at the paper and said, "Dock, you're pitching today!"

"That's when it was $9.50 to fly to San Diego. She got me to the airport at 3:30. I got there at 4:30, and the game started at 6:05pm. It was a twi-night doubleheader.

I can only remember bits and pieces of the game. I was psyched. I had a feeling of euphoria.

I was zeroed in on the (catcher's) glove, but I didn't hit the glove too much. I remember hitting a couple of batters and the bases were loaded two or three times.

The ball was small sometimes, the ball was large sometimes, sometimes I saw the catcher, sometimes I didn't. Sometimes I tried to stare the hitter down and throw while I was looking at him. I chewed my gum until it turned to powder. They say I had about three to four fielding chances. I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn't hit hard and never reached me."

The Pirates won the game, 2-0, although Ellis walked eight batters. It was the highpoint in the baseball career of one of the finer pitchers of his time, and arguably, one of the greatest achievements in the history of sports.

Avoiding the Pause Glitch

Recently saw this post on Eashl Forums
So, the game is finally over, you won! Wait a minute... the grades show up right away and you don't get the menu like you normally do. They pause glitched the game and the game will not count if;

1) If you press "A", the game will proceed to "Waiting for users" and keep looping forever.
2) If you go back to your dashboard thinking the game "froze" or "lagged out"

So, to prevent them from getting what they wanted... simply press "Start" when the grades show up (DONT PRESS "A"), it will bring up the regular end-game menu, simply quit out of the game like any other game you would've quit. It is very important that everyone on your team presses start and quits out like a regular game. If anybody presses "A" or goes to the dashboard, you're toast. That game won't count and you officially wasted the last half hour.

This will prevent the game from lagging out and never getting your "W".

Hopefully this will help a lot of people to get their rightfully deserved wins.

So it turns out only 2 people need to press start at the end game screen for the game to count but everyone should do it anyway just to be safe.

Cheerio!

Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Here are the release notes for the second patch.

Exploit fixes:

-Prevent players from entering games with attributes that are raised beyond the level they can reach with the card they are entitled to have. Players who have elevated their attributes this way should reset their character by changing the type and reassigning their points. Wooo
-Limit the size of human goalies in OTP/EASHL games to 6'4" (NOTE: it will still allow them to be set larger, but the actual height in game will not go above the new limit). More Wooo
-Fixed some problems that could cause the game to hang or go out of sync when pausing.
- Prevent use of LB to get up instantly after being knocked over. Whatev
-Reduce accuracy of shooting while using vision control to skate backwards. Wooo
-Prevent high, accurate slap shots from in close to the net. Wooo

Other changes:

-Reduced the ease of beating the goalie on the short side. Wooo
-Decrease the tendency of the goalies to use a desperation save unnecessarily. Wooo cuz we score anyway
-Strict calling of interference, though you can still clear players directly in front of the net without getting called for interference. Wooo for disciplined players. Booo for Yan, Barton, Syniper, Candyman, Eric, Eric, Eric, Zero, Zulu, Eric, Nikrandt, Eric etc.
-Added stick lift to Classic controls using LB+X(XBox) /L1+Square(PS3). It is also on R3 (press Right Stick). Wooo for Eric, Barton. Whatev for normal people.
-Fixed shot targeting using the Always Up control when skating down ice.
-Added new NHL rule to locate face- offs in the attacking zone to start a powerplay. Wooo
- Prevent CPU players from getting delay of game penalties frequently while clearing the puck from their zone.
- Prevent puck from being poke checked away from the goalie when he has it covered under his glove. Didn't realize it was that big of an issue.
-Reduced the amount of time it takes to get control of the last man back, holding RT(Xbox)/R2(PS3) offline
-Reduced the amount of time it takes to get control of the goalie, holding LB+A(Xbox)/L1+X(PS3) offline
-Reduce the range of heights on randomly generated CPU players, including goalies.
-Eliminate the ability to accelerate and maintain high speed while stick lifting.
-More penalties for high sticking when stick lifts are done from behind the opponent. Meh.
-Made the colours of the OTP/EASHL indicators more distinct (yellow and orange). Wooooooo
-Made face-off outcomes slightly more random and slightly less dependent on attributes.
-Added assistance to prevent one-timer and shot attempts from leading to accidental hits and interference penalties. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooo
-Goalie tuning to increase goal-scoring a bit to compensate for taking away the easy short-side high goals. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
-Improve hit stat tracking to not count all of the small bumps in front of the net.
-Increased injuries caused by CPU teams.
-Prevent puck from being launched with very high speed following a hit.
-AI tuning for superstar. The Aggression slider now affects how intense the CPU team is on that difficulty level.

The patch is out for PS3, but not yet for Xbox360.

Should be about a week or so.

Do it.
